Are you feeling lucky? It could be because it’s Friday the 13, but it could also be because you live in Connecticut.
Connecticut is the eighth luckiest state in the Union, according to a recent survey from Gambling Sites.
When putting together a ranking, Gambling Sites took lottery wins, life expectancy, crime levels, car accidents and natural disasters into consideration.
It compared lottery wins per 10 million people, crime and car accident rates per 100,000 people, and used data from the Red Cross to determine the likeliness of natural disasters. Gambling Sites did not say where they got information on life expectancy from, but that data is easily available from many sources, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Then, the analysts ranked the states for each metric and averaged the ranks.
Gambling Sites found that the Northeast was the luckiest part of the country. The top eight luckiest states were all in the Northeast.
Compared to other parts of the country, Connecticut has a high life expectancy—79.2 years at birth, and tied with Idaho for the ninth highest in the nation, according to the CDC—and low rates of crime and car accidents, Gambling Sites found. However, in terms of lottery winners, Connecticut comes in 30th place.
Despite this year’s floods and brush fires, Connecticut is in an 11-way tie for first place when it comes to “luck” with natural disasters.
The luckiest of all states is New Hampshire, which has the highest number of lottery winners per capita, and the lowest crime rate. And, like Connecticut, as well as nine of the ten luckiest states on this list, it is tied for first place when it comes to natural disasters.
After New Hampshire is Vermont, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York and Maine. After Connecticut comes Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, rounding out the top 10 luckiest states.
The unluckiest states in the nation are Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, South Carolina, New Mexico, Oklahoma—which, despite being unlucky overall, has the luckiest casinos in America—Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alaska.
Connecticut is leading in another category as well. Another survey from Gambling Sites published earlier this year found that the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville is the fifth luckiest casino in the country.
