Retail sales of adult-use and medical cannabis fell in the first month of 2024. The decline in retail sales of adult-use cannabis products between December 2023 and January 2024 marks the first decline in sales since recreational cannabis became legally available for purchase in January 2023.

Between January 1, 2024, and January 31, 2024, approximately $15.6 million worth of adult-use cannabis was sold in Connecticut, a decrease from roughly $17.2 million in December 2023. Sales of medical marijuana also fell between December 2023 and January 2024, from roughly $10.4 million to $9.4 million. But while sales of adult-use marijuana steadily climbed each month from January 2023, monthly medical marijuana sales have been more variable.

In the past 13 months, medical marijuana sales peaked in March of 2023, at roughly $12.6 million. Adult-use sales recorded their highest month to date in December 2023. In January 2023, when sales of adult-use marijuana began, medical marijuana sales outpaced adult-use, with medical marijuana sales at approximately $8.1 million to $5.1 million in sales for adult-use. In May 2023, sales for both types of cannabis were roughly equal: $11.5 million in adult use to $11.2 million in medical marijuana. Sales of adult use have outpaced medical marijuana ever since.

As of February 18, there are 40,925 patients registered in the state to receive medical marijuana.

Despite declining sales between December 2023 and January 2024, the average price of product for both adult-use and medical marijuana increased. On average, adult-use marijuana products cost $37.77 in December 2023 and $38.99 in January 2024. The average medical marijuana product cost $34.94 in December 2023 and $36.39 in January 2024.

Usable cannabis flowers accounted for 51 percent of retail sales in January 2023. Vape cartridges were the second most popular product to purchase in the same month, accounting for 29 percent of sales.
