The number of people moving into Connecticut has increased from last year, but overall in-migration still ranks low across all states according to new data from U-Haul. The data also shows a higher number of people leaving than entering the state.

Connecticut ranked 41 on U-Haul’s list of 2024 growth states. The study ranks the number of one-way U-Haul rentals by state, tracking over 2.5 million truck, trailer, and moving container transactions that indicate relocation into a state.

Connecticut’s rank has improved slightly from 2023, when it ranked 42.

According to U-Haul, their customers accounted for 48.4 percent of one-way traffic coming into the state and 51.6 percent of one-way traffic leaving the state.

Arrivals fell by nearly three percent between 2023 and 2024 and departures fell by two percent during the same period according to the data, as a result of slow moving traffic.

Cities that saw the largest number of inbound one-way traffic include Bristol, Colchester, Groton, Guilford, Hamden, Manchester, New London, Norwich, Pawcatuck, and Winsor Locks. Danbury, Waterbury, and Norwalk saw the same amount of inbound and outbound one-way traffic.

Connecticut had the second-lowest growth across New England states. Only Massachusetts, which was ranked 49, was lower. Massachusetts’ position remains the same as the previous year.

Of New England states, Maine ranked the highest, at 13. It jumped from 31 in 2023.

Across all states, South Carolina had the highest rating, followed by Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. Those five states also ranked highest in 2023, but in a different order.

“State-to-state transactions from the past year reaffirm customer tendencies that have been pronounced for some time.” John Taylor, the president of U-Haul, said in a press release. “Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life, and other factors that go into relocating to a new state. Out-migration remains prevalent for a number of markets across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast – and particularly California.”

California was ranked last in the list.

The cost of housing continues to be high in the Northeast, with the average price of a single-family home in Connecticut for 2024 costing $406,715. That figure is up 6.7 percent from 2023.
