Connecticut residents were most satisfied with health insurance coverage from Anthem in 2022 according to a consumer report card recently released by the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID).
The department annually conducts an assessment comparing health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and insurers with the highest premium volumes in the state that offer managed care plans. Additionally, the report card compiles the results of surveys mailed to consumers that measure satisfaction member levels with insurance plans.
The results indicate that Anthem received the highest member satisfaction ratings for both HMOs and indemnity plans. 81.2 percent of those surveyed gave Anthem’s HMO coverage a rating of 8 through 10, the highest available. Aetna Health had the next highest rating, with 75 percent of respondents giving it a rating of 8 through 10.
Anthem’s satisfaction ratings were also the highest of the state’s largest insurance providers for indemnity plans, with 61.8 percent of respondents giving it a rating of 8 through 10. Cigna H & L had the next highest rating, with 61.1 percent of respondents rating it an 8 through 10.
Anthem had the largest enrollment among managed care plan providers in the state in 2022. There were 234,689 enrollments in Anthem HMOs in 2022. ConnectiCare, which had the next largest enrollment, had only 8,008. Aetna Health had 87 enrollments, while Cigna had 5. Anthem’s enrollment numbers for indemnity plans also far exceeded those of other providers. Anthem had 815,518 in 2022, while Cigna H & L, the next highest leading provider, had 331,100. Aetna Life had 265,015 enrollees for 2022.
For both HMOs and indemnity plans, the vast majority of enrollees had coverage through large group plans.
Aetna did not perform as well as other providers in other areas where member satisfaction was surveyed.
The survey asked respondents various questions about their ability to obtain health care services, such as whether they were able to get various types of care as soon as it was needed, how easy it was to obtain needed treatments, and how often they received needed information from their plan’s customer service representatives.
Overall, Aetna Health performed the best in responses from HMO customers. 100 percent of those who responded to the survey indicated they were always able to get a routine check-up as soon as it was needed, were always able to get care as soon as it was needed, and it was always easy to get needed care, tests, and treatments when needed during the previous 12 month period. Satisfaction numbers for other providers were more mixed.
The satisfaction survey respondents expressed with services provided by indemnity plans were also more mixed. Aetna Life had the highest rating of respondents saying they were always able to get a specialist appointment when needed, at 48.5 percent. Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, which no longer sells plans in the state and will exit Connecticut’s market at the end of the year, had the highest rating of respondents saying they were always able to get routine care from a doctor’s office as soon as it was needed, at 51 percent.
58.2 percent of respondents said they were always able to get care as soon as it was needed from Aetna Life’s indemnity plans. Aetna Life also had the highest rate of respondents—49.2—percent who said it was always easy to get care, tests, or treatment when needed. Anthem had the highest rate of respondents—48.4—who said they always received needed information from customer service.
The report also looked at the percentage of members by insurance carrier who received various types of health care treatments during 2022 and broke down various types of requests and claims for care that were received or denied.
